The state capital of Munich warmly welcomes you to the 34th European Juggling Convention, which will take place in the summer of 2011. This is a first time for Munich. and we look forward to a week in which the city will be populated and no doubt enchanted by jugglers, acrobats and unicyclists.
The circus arts have a long and proud history in our city. Europe's largest circus, the famous Circus Krone, is based here. Also, Munich's legendary author Sigi Sommer once wrote: "The circus has always been Munich's favourite child."
However, Munich's jugglers are not exclusively professionals. For many years there has been a thriving amateur juggling scene. It is primarily based at the school gymnasium in Grafinger Straße, as well as other sports venues and in the English Garden next to the Monopteros. Every week jugglers practise and perfect their fascinating games with gravity there. Munich is also home to a vibrant children's and youth circus scene, which the city council takes great effort to support. Circus education is very important to us as it encourages creativity and integration.
I was therefore happy to take on the patronage of the EJC 2011. The City of Munich is also glad to support this unique juggling festival in various ways. The fact that an event of this magnitude is realized exclusively with the help of volunteers deserves special recognition. I would thus like to give my warmest thanks to the organisers and everyone involved.
Munich is known as a city of the arts as well as of sports. The EJC brings these two ideas together perfectly. However, Munich also has much to offer to this festival as a city which is open to the world, as a city that celebrates the joy of life and as an international meeting point. There could hardly be a better and more attractive venue.
So indulge yourself and soak up the unique atmosphere of our city! Juggle, let us be amazed, create new and surprising things! Let the people of Munich partake in your skill and your enthusiasm. Enjoy our city and its beautiful surroundings. We warmly welcome you to the 34th European Juggling Convention 2011 in Munich.
Christian Ude, Lord Mayor of Munich
